Surrey Golden Triangle – Where to live in Surrey

Published Aug 7, 2020 – 4 mins read

Exclusive areas across the UK are often given the title ‘Golden Triangle’, a term coined to describe a collection of residential areas, be it a number of towns and villages or certain postcodes and neighbourhoods within a larger town or city.

Surrey is one of the most popular of the home counties to buy a house and there are a number of exclusive places to live dotted across the county. The Surrey Golden Triangle is a concentrated pocket of residential areas that are among the most desirable places to live in the UK.

Property in Elmbridge

Surrey’s Golden Triangle is within the Surrey borough of Elmbridge; Weybridge, Esher, Cobham and Walton-on-Thames are all within the area. One of the largest appeals of Elmbridge is the proximity to London whilst being surrounded by Surrey countryside. Elmbridge borders with the London borough of Richmond upon Thames and the London Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames and officially forms part of the Greater London built-up area.

This leafy corner of Surrey offers easy access to both Heathrow and Gatwick airport, the ability to reach London’s West End in around 40 minutes, some of the country’s top schools, wide open green spaces, boutique shopping, fine restaurants and quaint village settings.

Elmbridge is particularly well known for its beautiful landscapes, large homes, generous gardens and is also known for its residents. Across the villages and towns within the Surrey Golden Triangle, there are several private estates, many of which are home to the rich and famous; the area has previously been labelled the Beverly Hills of Britain.

There is good reason for the appeal of the area to these residents – privacy, security and high quality homes being some of the key factors, properties here have been specifically laid out and designed to meet certain requirements.

St George’s Hill, Weybridge

Weybridge, or more specifically the internationally renowned area of St George’s Hill within Weybridge is an incredibly exclusive place to live within Surrey’s Golden Triangle.

St George’s Hill is a 964-acre private estate, with manned security and surveillance, residents have peace of mind for their privacy and safety. There are just over 400 houses within the large estate, along with a tennis and golf club.

The estate is closely managed by the St George’s Hill Residents Association who ensure the maintenance and high standards are maintained for those who live there.

The prospectus for St George’s Hill written by the original developer W G Tarrant read “No expense has been, or will be, spared to make the Estate the most desirable place of residence within easy reach of London.”

Oxshott, Leatherhead

Oxshott is an idyllic place to live in Surrey; a rural village with an edgy sophistication, well suited to those who want to live life in the countryside without having to compromise on access to amenities.

Transport links are excellent; the train from Oxshott station into London Waterloo takes around half an hour and by car the A3 and M25 motorways offer access into London and also to Gatwick and Heathrow airports.

Families are well catered for; there are several excellent schools in the vicinity and Danes Hill School is in Oxshott itself. There are also impressive local sporting facilities with the Oxshott Village Sports Club and several golf courses nearby.

Property in Oxshott ranges from period homes to modern and newly built properties, with the most desirable addresses in the village being within the Crown Estate which is one of the most prestigious private estates in Surrey.

Property in Esher

Esher is an incredibly popular place to live, particularly with families due to the impressive schooling on offer. Highly regarded independents Claremont Fan Court, Shrewsbury House, Rowan are all on the doorstep.

The high street offers an excellent range of shops and restaurants including a Waitrose, Cote Brasserie, Giggling Squid, The Good Earth and an Everyman Cinema. There’s also an incredible amount to do locally with the historic Hampton Court Palace nearby and the National Trust owned Claremont Gardens and Sandown Park where you can find horse racing, skiing, golf and go-karting within the town.

Homes in Esher range from modern, newly built grand houses to period properties, many of which are set on private roads. Some of the most exclusive homes in the area are located on the Claremont Estate.

Cobham houses for sale

Cobham is a pretty village with a busy centre and a strong community spirit. There’s no need to travel far for your day-to-day as there is a Waitrose, Whistles,  Mint Velvet, art gallery and an Ivy Brasserie.

For those who need to reach London with ease both Cobham & Stoke D’Abernon and Oxshott train stations are nearby and provide direct services to London Waterloo in around 40 minutes. The A3 and M25 motorway are close by for access to the national motorway network, Heathrow and Gatwick airports and into London.

Families are attracted to living in Cobham for the access to the excellent schools including the Yehudi Menuhin School, American Community School, Reeds, Danes Hill, Park Side and Notre Dame – all of which are highly regarded.

Those looking for houses for sale in Cobham will find a wide selection of property styles and ages, mostly though the properties are set within their own grounds and offer privacy.
